Surfing Essentials: The Stomp Pad Advantage

When it comes to mastering the art of surfing, every little detail matters. Stomp pads, though seemingly small, play a significant role in enhancing your performance on the waves. In this post, we’ll dive into the world of stomp pads, exploring their importance, different types, and whether they are truly a necessity for surfers.

Why Stomp Pads Matter

Stomp pads are the textured, grippy pads attached to the deck of your surfboard, positioned where your back foot rests. Their primary purpose? To provide you with superior traction, especially during those critical moments when you need to maneuver, turn, or pull off a trick. With a stomp pad under your back foot, you gain the confidence to execute swift and precise movements, enhancing your overall surfing experience.

Are Stomp Pads Necessary?

The question lingers: are stomp pads essential for every surfer? The answer depends on your skill level and personal preference. Novices might find stomp pads incredibly helpful as they provide stability and prevent slipping, making it easier to find the right footing on the board. For experienced surfers, stomp pads can be a game-changer, especially when performing advanced maneuvers or riding bigger waves.

Different Types of Stomp Pads
  • Flat Pads: These low-profile pads offer subtle grip without raising the height of your back foot. They are perfect for surfers who prefer a minimalist feel.

  • Arch Pads: Arch pads feature a raised middle section, offering support to the arch of your foot. They are great for surfers who want extra support and comfort during prolonged sessions.

  • Tail Pads: Tail pads cover a larger area at the tail of the board, providing ample grip for maneuvers requiring precise foot placement. They are popular among shortboarders and performance surfers.

  • Multi-Piece Pads: These pads come in multiple pieces, allowing surfers to customize the placement according to their preference. They are versatile and suitable for different board shapes and sizes.

How to Apply a Stomp Pad

Applying a stomp pad might seem daunting, but with a bit of patience and precision, you can get it just right. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you apply your stomp pad like a pro:

Prepare board

  1. Prepare Your Board: Start by cleaning the area where you plan to attach the stomp pad. Leave your board in the sun for 10-15 minutes to soften the wax. Then use a comb or edge of a credit card to scrap off all the wax. Use a board cleaner ( we recommend this one ) to remove any buildup in difficult places. Dry the area thoroughly with a towel.

  2. Position the Stomp Pad: Determine the ideal placement for your stomp pad. It typically goes in the center of the tail, where your back foot naturally rests, (some surfers prefer it slightly off-center, based on their stance). Once decided, carefully peel off the backing of the stomp pad and place lightly on the board. Avoid touching the adhesive side to prevent contamination.

  3. Press Firmly: Once aligned with your desired position, gently press down the stomp pad, starting from the center and moving outwards to the edges. Apply even pressure to ensure there are no air bubbles trapped underneath.

  4. Let It Set: Allow the stomp pad to set for around 24 hours before taking your board out for a surf session. This ensures the adhesive bonds securely with the board.

And there you have it - your surfboard is now equipped with a trusty stomp pad ready to enhance your surfing adventures!
